Letter of the Month
(Leatherneck will pay $25 for the Sound Off Letter of the Month.)
'03 at the Man
Dear Sir:
General (Merrill Barber) Twining wrote a letter (page 6, February issue) about Sergeant A. Junkers carrying a Springfield '03 in the Solomons in World War II. The general wrote, "It may well be the last photo ever taken of the good old Springfield rifle in the hands of a combat Marine ready to use it."
Robert Moskin's "The U.S. Marine Corps Story" (3d revised edition) shows Lieutenant Fred J. Fees in the kneeling position at the Han River, Korea, using an '03 Springfield with telescopic sights. The lieutenant was obviously a combat Marine, and he was sighting in on his prey.

Korea 40 Years Ago
Dear Sir:
I really look forward to each month's "Korea 40 Years Ago This Month" in the magazine.
The Korean War has often been called "The Forgotten War," but not as far as Leatherneck is concerned. I assume that the series will end with the July or August 1993 issue.
If that is the case, we hope someone will publish this compilation of articles in book form. I believe author Joe Saluzzi has made this same suggestion, too.
It would be a shame to have this series go down the drain. Many have heard of Pusan, Inchon and the Chosin, but many other facets of the war were almost unknown until Leatherneck brought it to the reader's attention.
I'd like to see the series published in book form and saved for posterity.

Historian Criticizes
Dear Sir:
As the historian for G/3/1 (Korea) Association, I must criticize an article in the January issue. But before I do that, I want to spread a little praise for the outstanding job that Leatherneck and Ron Keene, in particular, have done in reviewing the campaigns of World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
I am sure I speak for most veterans of any of those wars...
