Tysons Corner, Virginia-one of Joel Garreau's original "edge cities"-may, like the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz, finally get a heart. Two recent proposals seek to transform the booming automobile-oriented job center outside Washington, D.C., into a more pedestrian-friendly community.
An 18-acre project, approved in late February by officials of Fairfax County (pop. 820,000), would create a town center in the heart of Tysons Corner. Towers Crescent, to be designed by the architects of the Reston Town Center, will include restaurants, sidewalk cafes, banks, and retail shops. The design, by RTKL Associates, calls for five office buildings-ranging from five to 14 stories-grouped around a central plaza.
