In June’s most notable local transaction, Metairie-based Peoples Health agreed to sell to UnitedHealthcare, the country’s largest health care insurance provider. Peoples was founded in 1994 by physicians and has grown to 63,000 Medicare Advantage members and 850 employees. While United already has a strong presence in Louisiana, with more than 876,000 customers across Medicare, Medicaid and employer-sponsored plans, it lags in the state’s Medicare Advantage market. Humana dominates this market with a 62 percent share. Peoples Health is the second-largest Medicare Advantage provider in Louisiana with a 22 percent market share.
Louisiana’s largest June transaction was announced by Bossier Casino Ventures, which plans to sell its Margaritaville Resort Casino in Bossier City in a two-part transaction worth a combined $376 million. Opened in June 2013, Margaritaville’s amenities include 1,215 slots and 50 tables, six restaurants and a 1,000-seat theater in addition to 395 hotel rooms.
