Although the occasional viewer may not always remember his name, Carl Pellonpää is probably the most recognized celebrity in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
Every Sunday morning since March of 1962, WLUC-TV in Negaunee, Michigan, has brought Suomi Kutsuu (Finland Calling) to an estimated audience of 27,000 faithful viewers throughout the UP.
Initially conceived as a vehicle to promote travel to Finland by the stations General Manager and a local travel agent, Suomi Kutsuu has grown from a half-hour live broadcast to a full-hour program that is taped on Thursday mornings.
Pellonpää begins his show by welcoming his viewers in Finnish and then in English. He also introduces musical selections and makes announcements in both languages. Musical selections, which are quite often requests from viewers to commemorate a birthday...
