Earnings today:
State Street Corp. reported second-quarter net income applicable to common shareholders of $1.88 per share, up 23% from $1.53 per share in the year-ago period. In addition, State Street is buying Charles River Systems Inc., a provider of investment management front office tools and solutions, in an all-cash transaction for $2.6 billion.
SunTrust Banks Inc. reported second-quarter net income available to common shareholders of $697 million, a 38% increase from the year-ago period. Total revenue increased 4% year over year, driven largely by higher net interest income as a result of net interest margin expansion.
Birmingham, Ala.-based Regions Financial Corp. posted a 28% year-over-year increase in EPS in the second quarter.
U.S. President Donald Trump, in a CNBC interview, said he is "not thrilled" with the Federal Reserve's interest rate increases, a comment that could renew concerns over the central bank's independence. "Because we go up and every time you go up they want to raise rates again," Trump said. "I don't really -- I am not happy about it. But at the same time I'm letting them do what they feel is best."
