Hugh Thomas McElrath, F.H.S., died on May 8, 2008, at Penney Farms, Florida. Born November 21, 1921, in Murray, Kentucky, he was educated at Murray State University (B. A.), The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (B. S. M., M. S. M.), and the Eastman School of Music, the University of Rochester (Ph.D.). He also pursued sabbatical studies in Bologna, Italy; Oxford, England; and Zurich, Switzerland. In the first class to be graduated from the School of Church Music of Southern Seminary, he joined its faculty in 1948, becoming the V. V. Cooke Professor of Church Music in 1986. His teaching areas included music history, hymnology, worship, voice, vocal and choral literature, and ministry formation. He taught virtually every student enrolled in the seminary's School of Church Music between 1949 and 1992.
