While many companies are still cautious about investing in the recovery, Clariant Masterbatches is expanding. The company's new 72,000 sq ft facility in west Toronto will open in July, almost doubling the space in its existing plant.
Vice-president and general manager Thomas Bernhardt says actual manufacturing space to house the six extrusion lines more than doubles, from 12,240 sq ft to 31,600 sq ft., and warehouse space is also twice that now available. Two new extrusion lines will be added this year, and further capital expenditures are planned for 2003 and 2004
Laboratory space, which will have which will have multiple Arburg injection moulding machines, lab extrusion lines and two-roll mills for product development and quality control, is increasing from 4,500 to 8,300 sq ft.
"By the end of the year, we will have spent $2-million in capital equipment apart, from the building," Bernhardt says. "The building itself is custom-built, designed by us to our specifications.
