Making it in the male-dominated would of radio broadcasting took Karen Daniels 15 years of perseverance and tenacity. L
But she now sits with the cream of the crop as a morning personality a Kiss FM, Calgary's newest FM radio station in 15 years.
One of the most exciting things I've ever done is starting a new station," Daniels says.
Kiss FM, owned by Rawlco Communications, hit the air waves June 3 with its mix of the best of various types of music including rock, pop, alternative and country. Success was immediate as the September ratings showed Kiss FM had the most listeners in Calgary.
Daniels had been working at 66 CFR, a sister station to Kiss FM, when preparations were underway for the new radio station. She was urged to take a spot on the morning show.
"Demographically, she's right," says Vince Cownden, vice-president and general manager for 66 CFR/Kiss FM. The fact that Daniels is married with children makes her representative of a huge part of the audience, he notes. Daniels, 33, agrees she relates to one portion of the listeners, while Jerry Steen, a 46-year-old single parent of a teenage son, and Tim Kilpatrick, a single 29-year-old, relate to other parts of the morning audience.
