In short: It commands the highest price of the lasers in this roundup, but the HP LaserJet 5L Xtra gives the most in return: excellent print quality and commendable performance.
The HP LaserJet 5L Xtra is a "new, improved" version of the LaserJet 5L Hewlett-Packard introduced in 1995, and which we reviewed among the PC laser printers in last year's Consumer Lab printer test. The main difference? A library of productivity software that includes 101 Professional Letters, Avery LabelPro and Netscape Navigator Personal Edition (complete with bookmarks to HP pages to help you download driver updates and other information), plus trial versions of seven programs, including ACT and The Print Shop Ensemble II. Another difference: Last year the LaserJet 5L lost out to the less expensive Panasonic KX-P6100, but this year the LaserJet 5L Xtra beat all comers.
