Stand-alone PBX systems have traditionally been both proprietary and expensive, holding back many small to medium-sized businesses from purchasing them or upgrading their existing systems. Artisoft, Inc. has entered the growing PC-PBX field with the release of its TeleVantage PC-based telephone system.

TeleVantage features a Windows-based GUI designed to give the user complete call and message control from a PC desktop. Users can place calls, transfer, put on hold, send to voice mail and set up conference calls from their desktop.

E-mail features provided by TeleVantage include greetings, passwords, remote log-ins and visual access to voice mail that allows the sorting of messages into folders and the sharing of mailboxes among users or groups. It also provides call and message screening and "Follow Me" call forwarding so that users can decide in advance which calls are routed where and which calls get personalized greetings.

TeleVantage logs all calls and allows users to create personal call logs. Users can sort calls by priority, add notes and call logged contacts by clicking on the entry. System administrators can use the system log to track patterns and monitor usage efficiency.

The TeleVantage system has an auto attendant that may be used as a primary caller interface or used to answer after-hours calls. Callers can dial an extension directly or use the dial-byname directory. Separate auto attendants can be set up to handle multiple inbound lines or be used to create multilevel menus. Automated fax detection reroutes faxes to fax machines.

TeleVantage's graphical user interface allows systems administrators to manage the adds, moves and changes with the click of a button. The graphical administration utility manages user settings such as mailbox size, password length and dialing restrictions.

TeleVantage is designed to provide fault tolerance so that if the network goes down, the connections stay open, with critical phone lines staying up and running even in the case of a server malfunction or power outage. The TeleVantage server monitors its own status and automatically restarts if necessary. The mission-critical Windows NT server supports RAID drives and uninterruptable power supplies. TeleVantage is also scalable up to 96 extensions.

The TeleVantage system is based on open standards so that companies can take advantage of their existing equipment. The server runs on any PC and uses standard voice processing boards from Dialogic. TeleVantage also works with any standard analog phone.
