Nine months ago, Defense Secretary William Perry directed the implementation of initiatives related to military specifications, standards and procurement for major new military contracts. The result is the current reformation of the DOD standardization program. It's already affected some military specs and standards for passives.
The DOD's Standardization Program Division, Office of the Secretary of Defense, is actively reviewing military specs and standards with an eye to cancelling them if they are no longer needed, or transforming them into performance specs and non-governmental standards. Note that the Perry initiative does not wipe out the use of military specs and standards across the board. OEMs can still select military standards and specifications under specific conditions, and spare parts and existing contracts are not affected.
