According to Milton Santos' preface to this book: `The great challenge of this fin de siecle is the understanding of new economic and political structures that, organized on the planetary scale, are creating a truly new world, of which one of the marked aspects are new spatial configurations' (p. 9, this and all subsequent translations by the reviewer). Benko's text - which is intended to bring his work on these themes to a Brazilian audience - will serve its Brazilian readers well in the task of providing such an 'understanding', at least as transitions are understood in contemporary English and French language economic geography and regulationist literatures. As the blurb justifiably claims, the book `is not only for students [and teachers] of geography but also of urbanism, economics and sociology'.
