Denis Hirson and Martin Trump's decision to confine their selections to work published since 1945 indicates both the limitations and the special value of an anthology which appears at this moment in South Africa's political and social development, when it is appropriate to take stock of the country's culture not only as an expression of past reality but as a suggestion, one hopes, of possible resolutions of inherent problems.
