IN SPITE OF EDUARDO MENDOZA'S much-publicized statements as far back as 1996 that he had no plans to write another detective-- fiction novel with Barcelona as the setting, La aventura del tocador de senoras is clearly a return to that familiar territory both longed for and so enjoyed by the author's readers. Once again, Loquelvientosellevo, Sugranes, or X-we still do not learn his true name-is the first-person narrator and main character embroiled in a mystery that circumstances force him to solve. He is variously used, abused, and mistreated by almost everyone, managing to make friends only with the lower classes of society. Discharged from the insane asylum, he becomes the manager of his brother-in-law's beauty shop, inadvertently becomes involved...
