SUNIL GANGOPADHYAY BEGAN to write when Bengali literature was still under the expansive shadow of Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941). During the i95os, Gangopadhyay (b. 1934) and a few other young poets and writers struck out in directions that challenged the established esthetic while taking advantage of a rich tradition. Since those early days, Gangopadhyay has become an extremely popular, prolific novelist and short-story writer as well. The Satyajit Ray films Aranyer Din Ratri (1969) and Pratidwandi (i97o) were based on Gangopadhyay's fiction. His poetry, however, remains an important landmark in modem Bengali (and Indian) literary consciousness.
