STORIES FOR A WINTER'S NIGHT recalls Gerald Vizenor's introduction to Anishnabe Adisokan, a collection of Anishnabe stories. He writes that storytelling takes place during long winter nights, when Manabozho (the compassionate trickster) and other spirits cannot listen through animals or flowers. One has to exercise caution in storytelling during the summer so as not to offend these spirits, who are everywhere. Winter is safer, however, because all are asleep. At this time, when days are short and activities are few, storytellers pass down important skills and knowledge through tales such as those about Manabozho's trickery and exploits.
