CARLSBAD, Calf. - As part of a $2 million upgrade and expansion for the 2003 season, Legoland California has added three new attractions, including the park's fifth new ride since the facility opened in 1999.
Following the spring opening of the Bionicle Blaster, a Mack-built ride themed to the Lego Co.'s Bionicle line of toys, the park in May opened the Lego Sports Center interactive play area and the Upper Deck Sports Cafe.
All three are located adjacent to one another near the park's Technic coaster in an area that was expanded into some unused land beyond Legoland's existing fence.
"It's a 16,000-square-foot expansion to the footprint of the park," said Legoland California spokeswoman Courtney Simmons. "We blew the fence and expanded into unused acreage."
Like most everything else in the park, the one-acre area's new attractions are "hands-on, minds-on," Simmons said. "For instance, the kids make the Bionicle spin."
A spin on the new ride, aimed at families with kids from 8-12, lasts two minutes. It can handle 1,250 riders...
