Kanas ars (Karna's Inheritance) appears as the concluding volume of a trilogy by Herbjorg Wassmo that began with Dinas bok (Dina's Book; 1989; see Il.T65:2, p. 314) and was continued in Lykkens sonn (The Son of Happiness; 1992; see WLT 67:3, p. 623). The protagonist of the trilogy is Dina Gronely Bernhoft, an exceptionally strong, ruthless, and capable woman from the fictional town of Reinsnes in nineteenth-century northern Norway. Dinas bok, which tells the story of her childhood, teen marriage, and early years as an adult, ends in 1857, when Dina, who thirteen years earlier had murdered her adulterous husband, shoots to death her Russian lover Leo.
