Robert Harriman, former coordinator of the United States Newspaper Program at the Library of Congress, has been named program director, Digital & Preservation Cooperative, OCLC Digital & Preservation Resources (DPR).
In this newly created position, Mr Harriman will establish and promote partnerships with libraries, library organizations, cultural heritage agencies and professional organizations interested in joining the Digital & Preservation Cooperative and developing digital content collections.
Mr Harriman is recognized internationally as an authority on bibliographic control and preservation of newspapers and serials. His career spans more than 28 years at the Library of Congress - 18 as coordinator of the United States Newspaper Program, the largest cooperative preservation and access program in the USA.
"Throughout his career Bob Harriman has advocated cooperation among institutions to preserve materials of national significance, so leading our Digital & Preservation Cooperative is a great fit for him - and for the program," said Meg Bellinger, vice president, OCLC DPR. "Bob's expertise and experience with the United States Newspaper Program will be particularly valuable as OCLC works with libraries and other institutions to help them preserve and expand access to their historic newspapers through the OCLC Historic Newspaper Digitization service." The service, powered by Olive Software, is designed to provide electronic access to complete newspapers, page by page, down to the article level.
Mr Harriman has been a professional librarian for 30 years. He has held leadership positions in the American Library Association and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions, and has written and spoken extensively about the need for cooperation in digitization and preservation efforts.
The Digital & Preservation Cooperative is at the core of OCLC DPR initiatives to build a Digital Archive and expand DPR centers around the world. Digital & Preservation Cooperative participants come together to share knowledge and to increase the value of digital collections by combining them with other collections. The Cooperative provides a central knowledge base for digital activities throughout the information industry. It acts as a clearinghouse for information on digitization projects and on grants and other funding resources. The Cooperative provides the latest in best practices, standards and technology to help participants learn more about digitization and preservation trends.
