The basic difference between production design and art direction is that a production designer has a closer tie with the film, and is usually hired by the director. He then functions in total creative accord to visualize the script on paper, illustrating every complex scene and sequence. The director and the production designer work as collaborators to reshape the script, add the third dimension, almost to the degree of pre-editing the final film.
