Roman Polanski, France, 2002 Polanski wanted to make this film so badly for so long you can feel it. One senses it hasn't been gestating so much as it's been festering, boiling, building momentum like a runaway train. And, sure enough, more moments into the opening sequence - a tony piano recital in a state radio station - everything explodes.
