As an architect specializing in casino resort design, Joel D. Bergman, AIA, creates many lavish and whimsical designs that are full of fantasy and imagination, Through his work, he transforms large facilities to be reminiscent of specific time periods or environments. Some of his most recognizable work includes the Mirage Hotel and Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and the Golden Nugget in Atlantic City.
However, when speaking to Bergman, it is obvious that his ego has not been affected by all the glitz and glamour. The architect speaks very highly of mentors and associates that he has worked with through the years. He started Bergman, Walls & Associates (BWA) in 1994 with partner Scott Walls, and is very hands-on, working closely with the 42 members of his firm on all aspects of the design process,
Originally from Los Angeles, Bergman has lived in Las Vegas for 16 years and worked there for 36. He expresses his deep devotion for Las Vegas, and credits the energetic gaming environment for keeping his interests alive and fresh. "I have a Vegas mentality, whatever that exactly is," he laughed. "From the moment I first came here - long before I ever worked on these buildings - I was in love with Las Vegas. I like being part of this."
And when visiting BWA's office, it is evident that those working with the architect share his enthusiasm for hospitality design. It is a collaborative effort - from conception through completion of a project. Bergman is also complimentary of his associates, taking time to thank them for all their hard work at the end of a stressful day.
Bergman graduated Cum Laude and as a member of the National Architectural Honor Fraternity from the University of Southern California in 1965. After graduating, he worked with Martin Stern and Associates for 10 years and then spent 16 years working exclusively for Mirage Resorts. Bergman received the prestigious Silver Award in 1991 for the Mirage Hotel and was voted one of Atlantic City Magazine's "81 People for 1981."
