Q: WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU HAVE A CLIENT WHO IS 100 PERCENT GRAY AND HAS BEEN COLORING HER HAIR AT A LEVEL TWO FOR MANY YEARS? SHE WANTS TO BE TWO SHADES LIGHTER BUT DOESN'T WANT FOILS OR ANY BLEACH USED. Sarah Perry
A: When a client tells you what products you should use in her hair, she is not allowing you to do your job. In this case, I would use a color remover first to lighten her hair one level, and maybe even two levels if you are lucky and if it's not overly stained. If that doesn't work, you're going to have to apply some form of bleach afterward to lighten the hair further. If the bleach doesn't lighten the hair enough, you may want to add highlights for a blended effect. You have to explain to her that telling you she doesn't want any kind of bleach or foils in her hair is like telling a plumber to fix a sink without using a wrench. You need to use the right tools to achieve optimal results.
