Like most progressive companies, The Atchison, Topeka and Sante Fe Railroad Company (better known as The Sante Fe), moves information as expeditiously as it moves products. To enable it to handle 1.6 million carloads of freight a year, Sante Fe's communication system utilizes 200 microwave links spanning 4000 miles, has nearly 60 private branch exchanges, and communicates with each of its trains and maintenance vehicles by two-way radio.
The Sante Fe has approximately 15,000 identified customers, and its customer service center is presently located in the headquarters building in Schaumburg, IL, northwest of Chicago. Two rows of telecommunication equipment, including a ROLM 9751 Computerized Branch Exchange (CBX and a ROLM PhoneMail system, handle nearly 5000 calls each day. The switch is equipped with call detail recording software and provides records of all calls in and out of the facility.
The remaining equipment consists of an IBM 3745-150 concentrator, three IBM 9274 Model 90 12-channel voice response units (VRUs), one cabinet of digital circuit termination equipment, and two IBM 3174 control units driving 32 multi-session display terminals in the customer service center.
