Juniper Networks is not alone any more in combining BRAS (broadband remote access server) and edge router functions in one platform-Laurel Networks and Redback Networks, for example, also recently announced such integrated capabilities. But since Juniper's E-series already includes three BRAS/router combo boxes, did the vendor really need another chassis? Already with slightly more than a 50-percent share of the global broadband aggregation market, according to Gartner Group, Juniper this month released the ERX-310 for smaller distribution POPs serving largely small- or medium-sized businesses that use either DSL or fractional/Tl access lines for their voice, data and video services.
"Juniper is spreading the wealth of its ERX series with the new ERX-310 to carriers that do not require the horsepower or cannot justify the initial cost of a full-blown ERX," notes Joe McGarvey, senior analyst at Current Analysis.
