RocketTalk Upgrades; Buy.com Allies With eBay
A UCI professor is working on software that will help identify objects that the human eye can't detect - a well-camouflaged enemy weapons site or a lost child in dense woods, for example.
Glenn Healey, director of UCI's Computer Vision Laboratory and a professor in the School of Engineering, is developing software capable of processing images from "hyperspectral" cameras that measure hundreds of samples of color information. By analyzing the color data captured by these cameras, the computer can identify objects that neither radar nor the human eye can discern.
According to Healey, the technology could be used by the military, rescue teams looking for people in hard-to-search terrain, mining operations, or by the police, which could track vehicles that have been tagged with stickers bearing unique spectral properties.
It's unclear whether the technology can locate car keys.
