Irvine-based game publisher Interplay Productions Inc. is betting that it has a hit on its hands. Since releasing "Star Trek Starfleet Academy" last month, the science fiction game based on the famed television series has been the No. 1 selling computer CD-ROM game in North America, according to Interplay. In its first four days of release, Starfleet Academy was estimated to have sold more than 40,000 units, the company said.
In fact, the game is on its way to being the biggest selling title the company has released, according to Kim Motika, Interplay's vice president of sales for North America.
"It's going to be a fantastic Christmas for us," Motika said.
The game features full-motion video of William Shatner as Captain Kirk, Walter Koenig as Chekhov and George Takeias Captain Sulu.
