Joyce Rice and her husband Ted are in a sticky situation. And that's exactly where they want to be. Nothing tastes sweeter than the success of their bakery business that has generated scent-sational profits since the founding of T.J. Cinnamons in 1984.
The delectable nine-ounce, sticky, sweet cinnamon and pecan rolls were created in Joyce's Kansas City kitchen, but soon found their way into the stomachs and hearts of people across the nation. A recent grand opening of T.J. Cinnamons in the Laguna Hills Mall has brought the popular bakery to its first Orange County location. Soon to follow will be another opening at The Crossroads shopping center in Irvine.
The rapid expansion of T.J. Cinnamons is attributed to the Rices early decision to franchise their "hot" new business. By February 1987, Venture magazine named T.J. Cinnamons one of the "best bets in franchising." And, in November 1987, Venture named the company the "No. 1 growth franchise" in the country.
Such rapid growth of T.J. Cinnamons has even surprised the couple. Although never doubting the appeal of their gigantic and delicious concoctions, the original intent of their career change was to find a business that would allow them to work on a part-time basis, allowing more time to spend with each other and to supplement an early retirement. Currently, neither Joyce nor Ted mention the possibility of early retirement and the bit about part-time -- well, that was just a crazy notion they briefly entertained.
