The editing features are what set this VCR apart from all the others reviewed here. The HS-U59 has both "audio dub" and video-only "insert" capabilities. A jog/scan dial on the face of the VCR lets you control the playback speed of the tape. You can alternate among a variety of playback speeds--slow, normal, quick view, fast forward search, and forward high-speed search--to find a desired scene. The dial also lets you still the picture to cue up the exact point at which you want an edit to begin.
