At the end of February BP Amoco and the Algerian state company Sonatrach announced they will go ahead with the export of Algerian gas to Europe. Both companies are behind the development of the $2.5 billion In Salah field in the Saharan desert, some 1,200km south of the capital Algiers. In Salah will be funded 65% by BP Amoco and 35% by local Sonatrach. Construction work is expected to begin before the end, of 2000 with the main design and construction contracts due in by the second half of this year.
