A Human Rights Approach to Prison Management: Handbook for Prison Staff, by Andrew Coyle, International Centre for Prison Studies, 2002, 160 pp.
The preface to A Human Rights Approach to Prison Management: Handbook for Prison Staff is written by the Right Hon. Jack Straw, former British home secretary and, thus, the minister responsible for the United Kingdom's prisons and currently the British equivalent of secretary of state. He tells readers that in spite of the global consensus in favor of human rights, rhetoric does not match reality in many parts of the world. He goes on to say, "If we are to bridge this gap, we have to recognize that the implementation of human rights standards is not simply a question of abstract theory. It must have practical application in the day-to-day work of government."
