IHI looks to follow up with a piggyback initiative
With the successful conclusion of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's 100,000 Lives Campaign last week, the organization has launched a new related initiative seeking wider use of the six interventions promoted in the project. Dubbed "Six by Seven," the new campaign aims to get all hospitals participating in 100,000 Lives committed to using all six of its interventions by January 2007.
The initial campaign was launched on Dec. 14, 2004. Since then, an estimated 122,342 preventable deaths were averted at U.S. hospitals, said IHI President and Chief Executive Officer Donald Berwick on June 14 in Atlanta, where his Cambridge, Mass.-based organization was hosting its second-annual International Summit on Redesigning Hospital Care.
The IHI's 100,000 Lives Campaign to improve quality concluded as the organization wrestles with assessments by its auditor that its financial controls are lacking, according to its tax filings (See story, p. 10).
