Abstract
As literacy researchers interested in the relationship between literacy and identity, McCarthey and Moje discuss why identity matters to literacy. They discuss various theories of identity, the relationship between literacy and identity, and how identities and literacies are constructed and practiced within relationships of gender, race, class, and space. Woven into their conversations are findings of recent studies and their thoughts on what these findings and theories mean for K-12 classroom literacy practices.
