Manufacturing in Macomb County is booming--and leading the way in a broad economic-growth pattern for the county.
According to Macomb County's quarterly Economic Development Report, 20 manufacturers announced plans to expand or begin operations from January 1995 to March 1996.
Manufacturing jobs made up 15,000 of the 47,500 jobs created in the county since 1991, said Bernard Giampetroni, executive director of Macomb County's Department of Planning and Economic Development.
Between 1990 and 1993, the county averaged 20 new manufacturers a year, Giampetroni said. That's 10 percent of all new manufacturing companies established in Michigan over the same period, he said. The county has 2,000 manufacturing companies, Giampetroni said.
"Macomb has always been an industrial suburb of metro Detroit," said James Jacobs, associate vice president of community and employer services at Macomb Community College. Jacobs tracks Macomb's economic trends.
The manufacturing growth underscores general expansion in the county's economy.
