Packaging Unlimited has selected Franklin as the site of its newest manufacturing plant. The company has purchased a vacant 173,000 square-foot building. for the manufacture of corrugated packaging products and contract packaging work. The new company, Packaging Unlimited of Southern Kentucky, will service the Southern Kentucky/Nashville markets.
The company expects to hire about 50 people and begin operations in January 1998. Its total investment in the operation is approximately $4.3 million.
"Over the past few years, Kentucky has improved dramatically as a place to operate a business," said Bob Hanekamp, board chairman. "We look forward to continued significant growth of all of our Kentucky companies."
Packaging Unlimited was founded in Louisville in 1975. In 1984, the company started Promotional Packaging and Mike Alexander Dies Inc. In 1993, Packaging Unlimited of Northern Kentucky and Mass Bindery were formed. In 1996, Grafixation and Packaging Unlimited of Western Kentucky were started. Company officials say this rapid growth bears witness to the fact that Kentucky is a dynamic business environment.
Today, the company has eight plants in three cities with over 500 employees and a million square feet of manufacturing and distribution space. They include Packaging Unlimited, Inc.; Mike Alexander Dies, Inc.; and Mass Bindery, Inc. in Covington, Ky.; Packaging Unlimited, Inc.'s headquarters, Promotional Packaging, Inc.; Kit-Pak and Mik Alexander Dies, inc. in Louisville, Ky.; and Packaging Unlimited, Inc. in Lincolnton, N.C.
Headquartered near the UPS International Hub in Louisville, the PUL family can service virtually any geographic region in the world. Electronic Data Interchange Technology can link its plant to the customers for a seamless, JIT operation.
