Detroit-area paint-equipment makers are preparing to bid on two of the biggest automotive jobs this decade -- worth a combined $300 million in new business.
General Motors Corp. is holding out the biggest plum. The automaker is taking bids on a $200 million-plus program to install "primer surfacer" paint lines at seven GM plants around the country that build full-size pickup trucks, such as the Chevrolet C/K.
At least three local paint-finishing companies are chasing the job. GM expects to award the entire job or part of it by February.
The competing companies are Durr Industries Inc. in Plymouth, ABB Global Paint Finishing in Auburn Hills and Haden Schweitzer in Madison Heights.
The same three companies want a piece of building the paint shop at Mercedes-Benz Project Inc.'s proposed auto assembly plant in Vance, Ala.
