The well-known Murray's name will soon vanish from the list of Detroit retailers.
Starting next spring, the 79 Murray's Discount Auto stores in Southeast Michigan will take the name O'Reilly Auto Parts. The stores are in a transitional re-branding period, during which the stores will have both names.
It has been almost 15 years since the stores' co-founder, Murray Pitt, has owned the chain and four years since it has been based in Belleville. The latest acquisition is the fourth time the chain of auto parts stores has changed hands.
The stores were founded by Murray and Al Pitt in 1976. The brothers operated them until 1995, when New York-based private-equity fund Rosecllff Inc. acquired them for an undisclosed amount.
