Abstract

The introduction of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) and enhanced software has produced a trend of disappointing results in areas of computer analysis such as inventory control and production scheduling. Many surveys indicate that management rates management information systems (MIS) as less than successful in more than 50% of cases. In auditing a material requirements planning (MRP) system, Cox, Zmud and Clark (1981) stated that the reason up to 95% of systems fail is because of lack of planning. A successful system is understood and accepted by all members of the company. The greatest successes in computer application lie in the area of computer-controlled robots. Renewed commitments by management, along with the development of CAD/CAM systems, will help resolve the problems that have been encountered by MIS systems.
