Which says more about you-the way you make money or the way you spend it? A Roper ASW survey drew a mixed verdict when it asked respondents to pick the things that say the most about a person. Thirty-four percent cited the home one lives in, while 24 percent picked the causes to which one contributes. An equal number pointed to people's jobs and hobbies (20 percent each). Clothes/ jewelry/accessories were the most telling items for 14 percent, and 13 percent said the same of the music one listens to.
How many Americans are vegetarians? It depends on how one defines the term. In a Time/CNN poll, 4 percent of adults called themselves vegetarians. But on further questioning, 57 percent of this group turned out to be "semi-vegetarians," which means they "frequently but not systematically avoid meat and dairy." Likewise, 37 percent of those who said they're vegetarians also confessed to having eaten red meat in the previous 24 hours; 60 percent had consumed meat, poultry or seafood. One can infer that "vegetarian" is a highly popular brand name these days, while a truly vegetarian diet still has a relative handful of adherents.
