The present Archbishop of Canterbury, as is well known, is a distinguished theologian who has written on Orthodox theology, patristics, and a wide range of topics in contemporary theology. He is also a poet, a translator, and a frequent commentator on issues of Christian spirituality. This little book, the fruit of some spiritual conferences he had previously given, brings his prodigious learning and deep faith to bear on some classic icons, and does so in an effortless, readable fashion.
Williams reflects on four images: The Transfiguration, a Resurrection image, the world famous Rublev icon of the Hospitality of Abraham (also known as the "Old Testament Trinity"), and an icon of Christ Pantocrator. At one level, Williams insists that we look...
