The British ecology needs a wildcat in it
If successful, wildcats could be present in England for the first time since human persecution and habitat loss wiped them out 300 years ago.
The British Wildcat Project has been launched by the conservation group Wildcat Haven, which has been working for the past decade on saving the Scottish wildcat at sites across the Highlands.
Now, the group is spearheading some survey and research work in Galloway Forest in the south-west of Scotland to establish whether it could be a suitable habitat to introduce a new population of wildcats.
