Sometimes people adhere too closely to the "If it's not broke, don't try to fix it," mentality. Perhaps it is a rigid commitment to the past or a stubborn refusal to consider alternative solutions to a problem that causes individuals to turn their heads and look the other way. Maybe it's a manager or a coworker that falls into this category. Worse yet, we may have fallen into this trap ourselves without ever realizing it.
In their book The Big Book Of Business Games, John Newstrom and Edward Scannell describe this behavior as the "Pike Syndrome." They tell a story of a Northern pike placed in one half of a glass-divided table aquarium. On the other side are numerous minnows swimming freely...
