Implementing Peace Education in All Schools. Anne Adelson, Centre for Peace Studies, McMaster University, Hamilton, ON, Canada. <[email protected]>
When thousands of peace activists came together at The Hague last year to develop a plan for peace and justice for the 21st century, the first item on their agenda was the need to make peace education an integral part of every child's schooling. Peace education is also a key feature of the Nobel Peace Laureates' appeal for a Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-violence for the Children of the World. Given that the culture of peace represents a different way of thinking, and given that schools are a major institution socializing young people to the values of the dominant culture, tills emphasis is not surprising.
This paper will examine the key points of the Global Campaign for Peace Education launched at the Hague Appeal for Peace and of the Nobel laureates' appeal. It will give an account of the elements of peace education and how the concept has developed. Normative instruments related to peace education will be examined, both for their conceptual framework and for the political opportunities they give to a global campaign for peace education. The presentation will end on a practical note, encouraging participants to examine ways in which they can become involved in developing a short and long-term plan to implement peace education into the schools, making use of the opportunities offered by the international Year for the Culture of Peace and the Decade that follows.
