As Congress wrangles over the Federal Communications Commission's new media ownership rules, Tribune Co. is busy working on its local cross-ownership strategy in South Florida, where it owns the Sun-Sentinel and WBZL, its WB station. Although the company purchased the station in 1997 betting that the FCC would loosen its ban on cross-ownership of newspapers and broadcast outlets, it was only a year ago that Tribune got the commission's go-ahead to combine operations.
While it's too soon to draw definitive conclusions, Tribune is heartened by the early results. "We've already hit our goal for the year in incremental revenue at both the paper and the station," said Bob Gremillion, publisher of the Sun-Sentinel and who oversees both outlets.
