Paul Baxter retired in 1989 after twenty-five years of teaching at the University of Manchester. This Festschrift constitutes a tribute to an Africanist who has influenced many younger scholars in several disciplines, particularly anthropology. However, it is also an interesting collection of essays on topics that expand from North East to West Africa. The introduction by Brokensha, Baxter's first doctoral student, summarises in an elegant and concise way the essays to follow.
