Cambridge, Ada (1844-1926)
Australian novelist, poet, short-story writer
Born in Norfolk, England, she emigrated to Melbourne, Australia, with her husband, an Anglican clergyman, in 1870. Through several serialized novels she steadily built up a reputation that was consolidated with her first novel published in book form, A Marked Man (1890). Between 1865 and 1914 Cambridge published twenty-eight novels and five volumes of poetry, plus stories, essays, articles and autobiographical works. Her life was crowded with duties as a mother and clergyman's wife, cruelly marked by tragedy, hampered by financial worries, and confined by ill health.
