PFEIFER BEST IN GERMANY
Seventh a year ago, Hannover's Sergei Pfeifer earned the all-around title at the German men's championships, held May 6-7 in Albstadt. Pfeifer, 23, placed 20th at the '97 worlds but did not compete at the '99 worlds. Sven Kwiatkowski, third at the '99 German championships, placed second this year. Defending champion Andreas Wecker did not compete because of a broken thumb.

TOUSEK, JELTKOV TRIUMPH
Veterans Yvonne Tousek and Alexander Jeltkov won the women's and men's allaround titles, respectively, at the Canadian championships, held May 23-27 in Montreal.
Tousek, 20, placed third a year ago. She was 23rd at the '99 worlds, 20th at the '97 worlds and 26th at the '96 Olympics. Defending champion Julie Beaulieu, 17, finished second to Tousek, ahead of bronze medalist Michelle Conway, 16.
Junior winner Heather Purnell of Ottawa, Ontario, placed first in the novice division at the '99 Canadians. She will turn 14 on Nov. 5. Silver medalist Danielle Hicks, a 14-year-old from Ontario, won the '98 Canadian novice junior crown.
Jeltkov, silver medalist on high bar at the '99 worlds, took his first men's title. Born in the former Soviet republic of Georgia, the 22-year-old Jeltkov was second at the '99 and '98 Canadians. Third a year ago, 1996 Olympian Richard Ikeda moved into second. Bronze medalist Grand Golding, 19, finished sixth in '99.
Men's junior champion
Roy Asaria placed sixth in the same category a year ago. Born Oct. 27, 1982, he trains at the Vaughn club under coaches Bob Carisse and Tian Lu Zhou.
