Since its promulgation in 1983, a wealth of articles and books have been published on the Latin Code of Canon Law. However, such is not yet the case with the 1990 Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches. While the number of scholarly works and canonical opinions concerning the Eastern Code are becoming more popular, their relative scarcity has hindered the Code's pastoral application among the Eastern Churches. Still, a handful of canonists almost singlehandedly continue to advance the science of Eastern canon law, providing new insights in scholarship and praxis. The A., a recent recipient of the Canon Law Society of America Role of Law Award, is among them. A prolific writer, he has translated nearly five decades of pastoral experience and canonical expertise into ten books and countless articles, making Eastern canon law accessible to pastors, religious, and laity alike.
This current work is the only systematic and complete commentary on the entire Eastern Code published thus far. The work, which was first released in 1993, has been revised and expanded from 57 chapters to 71, from 699 to 938 pages, and now contains an augmented subject index of over 3000 entries, as well as a new index of legislators, codifiers, and commentators of 600 listings.
The six introductory chapters provide useful information concerning the study of Eastern canon law for students and specialists, information which is often either not well known or difficult to locate. Here the A. gives an overview of the historical...
