In the discipline of physical education, we are all affected by the chasm that exists between theory and practice and by our current joint failure to translate TGfU into a reality in classrooms and sports clubs. Paradoxically, some individuals and institutions find their interests are served by such a gap, since silence and denial have long helped society to default to the status quo. Some educators help to widen the chasm, and some work to bridge it, depending upon their position. The purpose of this article is to search for ways to make the essential work of narrowing, filling or bridging the chasm between theory and practice go forward most rapidly and effectively. TGfU stands ready to bring physical education into line with all other subject areas, as they pursue educational goals in critical thinking problem solving and decision making. We will describe how TGfU, as a curriculum approach implemented in quality physical education programs, can integrate the overall goals of schooling. The approach is becoming broadly accepted in many countries as an effective method of teaching games, and it is time for more Canadian physical educators to get on board and help move it forward. In this article we will (a) describe how teachers can get involved in teaching TGfU, using tried and tested means for implementing curricular innovations and (b) identify the cautions that teachers have, the pedagogical strategies for dealing with these, and the successes of students, as more of them become better games players and experience greater enjoyment through engagement with TGfU.
L'approche ACJ tente d'aligner l'éducation physique...
