Analyses of Nineteenth- and Twentieth Century Music, 1940-2000. By D. J. Hoek, incorporating by Arthur Wenk. Music Library Association Index and Bibliography Series, No. 34. Lanham, Maryland: Scarecrow Press, 2007. [xxvi, 347 p. ISBN 978-0-81085-887-9; ISBN 0-8108-5887-8. $75]
This volume, a bibliography of secondary literature dealing analytically with music of the previous two centuries, is a welcome update to its widely-used predecessor, Arthur Wenk's Analyses of Nineteenth- and Twentieth Century Music: 1940-1985 (Music Library Association, 1987). Wenk's volume, in turn, updated separate volumes devoted to 19th-century and 20th-century music, published in 1975, 1976, and 1984 (20th-century) and in 1976 and 1984 (19th-century). In format, the current volume follows its immediate predecessor quite closely. Entries are arranged alphabetically by composer. Where there are more than ten entries for a composer, these entries are subdivided into categories for specific works or genres. A concluding subheading entitled "Various Works" lists publications that deal with more than a single composition or genre. Where the title of an article does not make it clear which of a composer's works is being discussed, the name of the work follows the citation in brackets. The alphabetical listing by composer which comprises the main body of the work is followed by a concluding alphabetical listing by author.
In contents, the current volume includes nearly all of Wenk's materials, with materials published from 1986-2000 added to them. The current volume has grown considerably from Wenk. There are 9,306 entries, compared to Wenk's 5,664. Hoek has drawn from over 160 journals (including on-line journals), compared to Wenk's 132. Hoek's bibliography contains 1,066 composers, Wenk's 779. Entries are in the major European languages, but do not include, for example, Hungarian writings on Bartók, or theoretical works in Russian.
